Dr. Georgia Rigas brings a holistic care approach to the management of people living with obesity and the associated metabolic health complications. Dr. Rigas has three key areas of focus in her practice:
  • Menopause and Metabolism She studies how hormonal, nutritional, physical activity and body composition changes during menopause impact women’s health.
  • Fertility and Obesity She explores the effects of obesity management on pre-diabetes, PCOS, fertility and pregnancy outcomes.
  • Preventative Health She is passionate about preventing or putting into remission, diseases linked to obesity, including heart, kidney, and metabolic conditions (CRMS).

Dr Rigas was recognised as a SCOPE certified Obesity doctor in 2015, by the World Obesity Federation. She was also Australia's first internationally recognised GP Bariatric Care Specialist (as awarded by the American Surgical Review Corporation in 2018). With pover 15 years of clinical experience in managing people living with pre-obesity (overweight) or obesity and it's associated health consequences, she brings a holistic and empathic approach to patient care.

  • Medical Obesity Management

    "Add-on" therapies refer to in addition to lifestyle [LS] optimisation, not instead of. These can include any of the following: very-low-energy-diets [VLEDs], obesity management medications [OMMs], endoscopic bariatric therapies, and metabolic bariatric surgery [MBS].

  • Metabolic Bariatric SurgeryThere are several different operations which can be performed to help assist individuals with their excess weight and associated conditions eg improve management of type 2 diabetes; reduced knee pain and subsequent improved function.
  • Preventative HealthcareA comprehensive health assessment that considers your medical and family history can help identify risks early, including harmful visceral adipose ("fat" stored around vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys).
  • Fertility/ Pre-Pregnancy HealthcareOptimising the health of a couple prior to conception is crucial. Not only for enhancing the probability of falling pregnant and the pregnancy going to term, but also to reduce the risks to both mother and child, associated with falling pregnant when living with obesity, pre-diabetes/ insulin resistance, PCOS +/- other associated health conditions which affect fertility.
  • Menopause & MetabolismApproximately five years before menopause, changes in adipose /"fat" and muscle mass begin, namely (i)adipose mass starts increasing at double the usual rate and (ii) lean muscle mass gradually decreases. As a result, weight tends to rise steadily during the peri-menopause and continues to do so until about two years after the last menstrual period. After this point, the body usually stabilizes at a new "set point" for body composition.
Need BMI ≥ 30 OR BMI ≥ 27 and at least one health condition which should improve with a reduction in adipose levels.
The Classification of obesity is having a body mass index (BMI) of 30kg/m or more.
