Medical Obesity Management

"Add-on" therapies refer to in addition to lifestyle [LS] optimisation, not instead of. These can include any of the following: very-low-energy-diets [VLEDs], obesity management medications [OMMs], endoscopic bariatric therapies, and metabolic bariatric surgery [MBS]. Given obesity is a chronic progressive disease, over time a "step-up" i.e. intensification of therapy and/or combination therapy may be required.

Metabolic Bariatric Surgery

There are several different operations which can be performed to help assist individuals with their excess weight and associated conditions eg improve management of type 2 diabetes; reduced knee pain and subsequent improved function.

Preventative Healthcare

A comprehensive health assessment that considers your medical and family history can help identify risks early, including harmful visceral adipose ("fat" stored around vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys). This type of adipose is linked to a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other metabolic conditions. By addressing these risks, a personalized plan can be developed to manage your health and reduce or delay potential complications.

Fertility/ Pre-Pregnancy Healthcare

Optimising the health of a couple prior to conception is crucial. Not only for enhancing the probability of falling pregnant and the pregnancy going to term, but also to reduce the risks to both mother and child, associated with falling pregnant when living with obesity, pre-diabetes/ insulin resistance, PCOS +/- other associated health conditions which affect fertility.

Menopause & Metabolism

Approximately five years before menopause, changes in adipose /"fat" and muscle mass begin, namely (i)adipose mass starts increasing at double the usual rate and (ii) lean muscle mass gradually decreases. As a result, weight tends to rise steadily during the peri-menopause and continues to do so until about two years after the last menstrual period. After this point, the body usually stabilizes at a new "set point" for body composition.

At the same time, reduced oestrogen levels during the menopause transition increase the risk of developing serious health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, and some cancers. Early awareness and proactive management can help mitigate these risks.
